Being Intentional Takes Too Much Time!

Posted by Robert Schneider on May 5, 2009

Last night I was exhausted. I only slept about 4 hours the night before because I was up working on a new business idea. Then, yesterday afternoon I just bought my new motorcycle…had to test drive it a little to make sure I didn’t get ripped off!  After that I tidied up a few things in my office, it was only 10.  I usually go to bed around 11-12.

I tried thinking about my task list for the next day but my brain was fried.  I just wanted to slide into my warm flannel sheets and pass out. But my discipline is to plot out my tasks for the next day. This whole planning ahead thing takes a lot of time!

Well, actually it doesn’t.  In fact, I gave in to the flesh.  I could barely hold my head up.  I went to bed and had a long night of sound sleep.  I woke up refreshed and ready to charge.  But wait, what about my task list?  I didn’t map it out last night!

Here’s what’s awesome: My task list IS in order.  I just couldn’t handle the few minutes of nightly review and priority for the next day.  But it’s not the end of the world because my overall task list is still assembled in Remember the Milk.  I put all my tasks for all my projects into RTM once every month or so.  That way my daily task list is roughly in order.

So, the day is not ruined.  I just spent a few minutes this morning choosing my biggest priority items and hit the road running.

Being intentional takes very little time when done right and regularly.  As the saying goes, “One minute of planning saves ten minutes of execution.”  Here’s how I control my time so it doesn’t control me: Time Control
